I'm a sucker for a well-written TV show/movie. It's more important in TV shows because they have you glued to your seat for 30-60 minutes weekly. For me, character development keeps me coming back. Whether it's rooting for their successes or wishing she got more than just being buried in rubble along with her lover/brother, a character with depth keeps me watching a show. My top 5 favorite shows have not changed much over the years. This is how it goes for TV dramas:
1. The Wire
2. Sons of Anarchy
3. Spartacus
4. Nip/Tuck
5. House
All of these shows have memorable characters. From Avon Barksdale & Marlo to Bubbles that were on The Wire, their stories were lasting and there was more to each one of the characters in between. Omar and Snoop were my favorite characters. Jax from SOA was in a conflicted position as president of Sam Crow. Almost every main gladiator on Spartacus had a reason to fight other than survival. Christian Troy from Nip/Tuck; need I say more? The titular character from House is one of my role models. To be smart and an asshole about it, but also have so many other things that he hid was something I could relate to. Vikings on the History Channel is moving up the list. There are others that are just good and some that just couldn't cut it (see: True Blood, Dexter & Power).
One that just might knock off one of the top 5 depending on how it ends is This Is Us. I was told by someone very important in my life to check this out. I'm so glad I was introduced to this. No main person on the show is a throwaway character. It's so good that throughout the season I can't decide who to root more for. One of the main characters that I enjoy is Randall. He has major flaws, but overall he is a good person that sometimes doesn't make the best decisions. I also love his wife's personality. To me, she is amazing. This dynamic leads me to the reason for the post. Thinking about a situation I had and Beth and Randall's rocky marriage in season 3 led me to the lines that began the poem below. Let me know what you think.
The Weekend by Me
Chillin on the weekend listening to The Weeknd
As thoughts seep in
When memories speak and
Reality sinks in
That I’m still out here seekin
Sweetness from a fruit that I stupidly discarded
Departed from her presence
Yet I still sense her essence
See presently, the present me thinks of her pleasantly
As I stand helplessly yearning for her hearts melody
We share pleasantries with brevity and converse delicately
Because the levity makes us forget life’s complexity
Especially, if the conversation is filled with integrity
Incredibly, this is us if Randall and Beth separated
Captivated by how the universe’s math has been calculated
See no matter how we’re divided, the future seems to add up to you
In and out my life like Deja
Sometimes in a daze I have deja vu
Have yet to address your body because my zip code is still on your mind
And until I mined and find the connection to every synapse that’s intertwined
To you a portion of my heart will be assigned
And like Hov’s credit it’ll never decline
As I give credit where credit is due
Never wonder who to give credit to
Because the man today is indebted to you
And that’s true
